Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum), known by herbalists as a miracle worker, has so many uses in herbal medicine. One of my herbal teachers told us how he carries a tincture of cayenne pepper with him all the time! One of the most studied uses of Cayenne is as a circulatory stimulant, an herb that feeds the necessary elements into the cell structure of the arteries, veins, and capillaries so that they, regain youthful elasticity and so that the blood pressure reduces itself to normal. When the venous structure becomes loaded with sticky mucus, the blood cannot circulate freely, so higher pressure is needed to force the blood through. Cayenne equalizes the blood pressure, influencing the heart immediately, and then extending its effects to the venous structure. It also works to cut the mucus in the venous system, and indeed, in all the systems throughout the body.
Topically, however, cayenne possesses anti-inflammatory & analgesic properties (even offering relief from nerve pain "neuralgia"). One of many ways to extract the medicinal constituents (one of which is capsaicin) for topical application is by infusing in an oil, preferably olive oil. There are many methods to create a potent herbal infused oil, traditionally we used to macerate the herb in oil for an extended period of time (3 months or more) but today many herbalists use some modern equipment and new methods to yield a more concentrated and potent oil. Cayenne Herbal Infused Oil is the main ingredient in one of our famous deep healing balms fire & ice salve, which is made by combining fire (Cayenne) with ice (Menthol Crystals) and a blend of essential oils to augment the healing properties of the remedy.
Another extremely valuable property of cayenne, when we learn as medical herbalists the science and art of herbal formulations, Cayenne is used as an accentuator with other herbs; it increases the value and healing properties of the herbs and greatly help carries them to the afflicted part of the body.
